The public is invited to Strut the Parks in the South Chattanooga community of Alton Park on Saturday, June 22.
The celebration features family friendly games, music, giveaways, free food and fellowship. Activities take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Milliken Park (100 W. 45th St.), Ben Miller Park (1059 W. 40th St.), and Southside Community Park (3500 Central Ave.). It’s open to all who live, worship, work, play, invest in, and support Alton Park.
“We invite you to join us, as we celebrate the parks we have and advocate for those we envision for our community,” said Raquetta Dotley, program director for The Net Resource Foundation.
The Net Resource Foundation, a mentorship and community-building nonprofit in Alton Park, is one of eight nonprofits across five major metropolitan areas to receive a 10-Minute Walk Campaign national grant from The Trust for Public Land, National Recreation and Park Association, and Urban Land Institute. The grant supports safe and equitable access to green spaces. According to its website, only 37 percent of Chattanooga residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.
Strut the Parks is the kickoff event to the foundation’s year-long series of community festivals, educational activities, and beautification plans. The organization aims to “Put the Park Back in Alton Park” by harnessing the power of faith-based and community ties to strengthen people’s connections to parks in the Alton Park community.
