Who’s Money Is It Anyway?

  • Sunday, June 16, 2019

At the last commissioners meeting there was a lengthy discussion on tax relief for low-income senior citizens.  It seems like some of the commissioners, who are for the property tax increase, finally realized it is not going to be an easy sell to the taxpayers. So, there was a proposal to give low-income citizens a little tax relief.

As I listened to the discussion going back and forth it occurred to me that they were talking about our money as if it was theirs.  Here are some of the statements that were made:

How much will it cost us?

We need to have a financial impact study.

Can Hamilton County afford this?

People will have to prove they qualify.

We can’t vote on this until we know what it will cost us.

It seems like we are thought of as their bank account.  They get to decide how much of their money, that is in our account, they will let us keep.  Don’t you wish it was the other way around? What if they had to do an impact study on how raising our taxes would affect us?  What if they had to prove that they used our money wisely? Isn’t it about time we say enough is enough.
