Vintage Base Ball 6th Cavalry Cup Championship Plays Saturday

  • Sunday, June 23, 2019

Two local vintage base ball teams will battle it out on the field Saturday to see who is the victor in this year’s 6th Cavalry Cup Championship. Mountain City of Chattanooga plays Lightfoot Club of Chattanooga at noon on the polo field on Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe.

Both teams have been a part of the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball since 2016. Lightfoot of Chattanooga calls the polo field home, while Mountain City of Chattanooga’s home field is Tennessee River Park. The teams play other vintage base ball teams in matches throughout Tennessee and travel to other states for tournaments.

Competition for the 6th Cavalry Cup Championship began in 2016. Lightfoot Club of Chattanooga won the cup in 2016, and Mountain City of Chattanooga won in 2017 and 2018. Which team will take home the cup in 2019? It’s anyone’s guess as both teams have had a good 2019 season. To date Lightfoot of Chattanooga has three wins and two losses while Mountain City of Chattanooga currently stands at two wins and four losses.

Vintage base ball observes the rules and customs of the 1860s. Base ball was a gentleman's game back then. There was “no spittin', no swearin' and no gloves.”  Additionally, players (ballists) wear period uniforms and use period appropriate equipment (i.e. wooden base ball bats known as sticks). Come cheer on both teams on Saturday on the polo field (Huzzah!). Bring lawn chairs or blankets as there is no bleacher seating available. The 6th Cavalry Museum will be open for tours and restrooms. No admission charge for the games or to see the museum. Doug Carson will add to the atmosphere by playing 1860's period music during the match.
