The City Council has renamed its building behind City Hall in honor of John P. Franklin, who died earlier this year at 96.
He was the former city commissioner of education in the prior form of government.
His family was long involved in the funeral home business, including the Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home and the current John P. Franklin Funeral Home on Dodds Avenue.
Mr. Franklin also served as a teacher and coach in the city schools.
The building is the former home of City Court and the city jail.
It was remodeled for offices and the meeting area of the council.
