Born May 19, 1938, in Chattanooga to Jac and Bena Chambliss, John graduated from Webb School at Bell Buckle,  the University of Chattanooga and the School of Banking of the South at LSU.

John grew up on Lookout Mountain, worked as a manager at the American National Bank and Trust Co. on Lookout Mountain, was a teacher at Monteagle Mountain Schools and later provided historical Civil War tours in Chattanooga and at the Chickamauga Battlefield.

He was a member of the vestry and a treasurer of the Church of the Good Shepherd

He was a member of the board of directors of the Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia Railroad.

In his younger years, John loved tennis and introduced his son to the sport.

He also enjoyed photography. For years, he walked through Reflection Riding, taking pictures of nature. During his later years, John often traveled to Cumming and Lakeland, Fla., to visit his children and grandchildren.

One of the great joys of his life was reconnecting with a friend from college, Jane Huffman Murray, at their 50-year college reunion. He and Jane were able to travel together and enjoy each other’s company for the last several years.

Despite suffering from dementia in his later years, John remained positive.

A loving father to his two children, John enjoyed celebrating his 78th birthday with his classmates from Webb at his daughter’s home in Cumming. He cherished going to lunch with his daughter when he moved to Georgia.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Jac and Bena Chambliss; his younger sister, Betsy McLean; and first wife, Sylvia Chambliss-Hare.
