Chester Thomas Sims, 69, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019, at his residence.
He was the first African American student to graduate from Ooltewah High School in 1968. Chester was a United States Army veteran and served four years in Vietnam. He was employed by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) where he retired after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Local 43 Pipefitters Union. Chester was a member of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, George T. Sims; brothers, Ronnie Sims and Chris Sims.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Gwendolyn Sims; daughters, Kimberly (Ezekiel) Jones of Nashville, TN, Christy Sims of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Jasmine (Michael) Armstrong, Raven Jones, all of Nashville, DeAndrea Robinson, Erica Jones, and Jaliyah Mays, all of Chattanooga, and Brandon Trammell of Fort Worth, TX; great-grandchildren, Zion Armstrong, Nia Armstrong, and Marley Armstrong all of Nashville; mother, Desamer L. Sims of Chattanooga; brothers, Gilbert (Sharon) Sims of Atlanta, GA, George (Skeeter) Sims, James C. Sims, Lee (Beverly) Sims, and Jerome (Francis) Favors; sisters, Georgia (George) Ford, Constance (Charles) Meadows, and Shental Allen, all of Chattanooga; mother-in-law, Florinda Calloway; brothers-in-law, Richard McKinley, Byron (Wanda) McKinley, Alfred (Johnetta) McKinley, all of Chattanooga, Steve (Jackie) McKinley of Atlanta, GA, and Ronald (Denise) McKinley of Louisville, KY; sisters-in-law, Frankie Mae Sims and Patricia Roberson, both of Chattanooga; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; church family; Hospice of Chattanooga; other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 11, from 7-8 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be on Friday, July 12, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Moore as the eulogist.
Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
