Author Mark Hughes At Chickamauga And Chattanooga National Military Park Saturday

  • Monday, July 15, 2019
In partnership with the National Park Service, Eastern National invites the public to join Mark Hughes, author of the 2019 release, Confederate Soldiers in the American Civil War and a 2009 best seller, The New Civil War Handbook. Mr. Hughes will be available Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. inside the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center to meet and sign copies of his book.

"Confederate Soldiers in the American Civil War is an invaluable reference guide and an excellent way for introducing the Civil War to anyone of any age," officials said.  "Hughes uses a format similar to his best -selling The New Civil War Handbook by including photos and illustrations.  Coverage includes camp life, weapons, battles, technology, hospitals, the effects on civilians and women, prisons, the naval war, forts, and African American and Native American participation.  In addition, Hughes includes stories of more than 80 Confederate Soldiers."

“In addition to being a superb pictorial, Confederate Soldiers in the American Civil War is a gem of book for the Civil War neophyte, or for a veteran Civil War enthusiast, who, like me, can sometimes use a refresher on basic facts and figures.  Focusing on Confederate soldiery, Mark Hughes eschews minutia and mind-numbing analysis, providing instead an efficient understandable overview of the Southern soldier,” said Stephen M.
Hood, author of The Lost Papers of Confederate General John Bell Hood

The New Civil War Handbook is a 2009 best seller and offers a complete guide for American Civil War enthusiasts of all ages.  Coverage includes the opening of the war, battles, the common soldier, technology, weapons, women, African American and Native American participation, hospitals, prisons, the naval war, artillery and more.  In addition, Mr. Hughes includes photos, quotations, battle losses, strengths, engagements by state and territory, major causes of death and an extensive list of Civil War sites around the country.

“This is the type of book I have always wanted to publish—a simple and simply riveting title that will stir the spirit of young and old alike with a yearning to read more and hit the battlefields running,”
said Theodore P. Savas, Publisher, Savas Beatie LLC

About the author:  A graduate of Gaston College where he received his AAS, and from Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he received his BS and masters of technology, Mark Hughes worked as an electronics technologist for 43 years before retirement. Mr. Hughes is recognized as an authority on Civil War Cemeteries.  His title The New Civil War Handbook is a 2009 best seller and he has written other books and articles.  Currently, Mr. Hughes resides in North Carolina with his wife and daughter.
