The YMCA is taking its new "Mobile Market" program to Patten Towers at 11th and Market.

There was a party on Monday afternoon at the former hotel, with notable politicians and figures on hand to commemorate a new partnership between the YMCA and Amerigroup.

Amerigroup will help further the YMCA’s “Mobile Market” program. This program assists communities in “food deserts” by providing a way to get fresh produce and nutritious foods in places that otherwise do not have the means to do so.

Mobile Market CEO Janet Dunn thanked all who attended for coming out and supporting this program. “We’re thrilled that you’ve joined us,” said the CEO, who also characterized the partnership as a “win-win” for the Chattanooga area.

Mayor Andy Berke stressed that the nature of their mission was a long-term one. “Our culture is fried food, barbeque, and other things that aren’t eh healthiest for us,” said Mayor Berke, “the culture needs to change so we are healthier….people need to want to eat healthier. We need to get people off of food deserts.”

Amerigroup president Robert Garnett praised the Chattanooga YMCA and spoke glowingly of the organization’s work with breaking down barriers of all kinds in the community.

Mr. Garnett also called the YMCA “ahead of their time,” and let the audience know the YMCA had been fighting to end food deserts since 2012, far before It was a widely discussed subject.

Rep. Yusuf Hakeem also had much to say about this new partnership. “Amerigroup, you didn’t have to do this, but you did,” said Rep. Hakeem, “so thank you.”

Like many of the other speakers, he stressed the importance of having access to nutritious food and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Citizens go to the doctor, to treat whatever illness or concern they might have,” said Rep. Hakeem, “but if they come home and they don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, it sort of nullifies what they’ve gone to the doctor for.”

Rep. Hakeem also spoke glowingly of the YMCA, saying “The YMCA has been doing this for eight years. It’s just so incredible, what they do bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to the community.”

After the speakers had said all they wanted to say, the improved mobile market was officially opened. A van of sorts full of produce and good food was quickly filled by Chattanooga residents, eager to buy some of the fresh food housed within.
