Unum
has been named one of the 2019 Disability Equality Index (DEI) “Best Places to Work” for disability inclusion by the joint initiative of the Disability: IN and American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). Unum scored particularly high for culture and leadership committed to inclusion.
“The Disability Equality Index benchmarks our practices and shows where we can improve to be the most inclusive, diverse and welcoming company for our employees,” said Elizabeth Ahmed, executive vice president of People and Communications.
“Unum is committed to ensuring an inclusive workplace, which allows employees to bring their best selves to work and better reflects the millions of people and families we protect.”
The benchmark offers an objective measure of disability inclusion practices and procedures. Companies are rated on several key performance indicators including culture, leadership, accessibility, employment, community engagement, support services and supplier diversity.
Unum offers a variety of programs, benefits and resources to advance an inclusive culture so all employees can reach their full potential. More than 400 employees are involved in Employee Resource Groups to champion initiatives related to creating an inclusive culture.
The company’s Ability Employee Resource Group, one of five ERGs at Unum, is a community of employees with disabilities, caregivers to family members with disabilities, and allies of people with disabilities. The group raises awareness of what it’s like to live and work with a disability and helps others understand the challenges they face. The Ability ERG also explores ways the company can better connect with customers and the community.
