Reilley Malone
The Phi Eta Sigma national office has awarded scholarships to Lee University students Reilley Malone and Sammie Kate Eason for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Ms. Malone received a $5,000 undergraduate scholarship and Ms. Eason was awarded $1,000.
“I am so grateful to have received this scholarship,” said Ms. Malone. “It will help make Lee more affordable for me this school year and possibly provide me with the opportunity to take a cross cultural trip.”
Ms. Malone is a rising junior nursing major from Chattanooga. She is the vice president of Phi Eta Sigma and currently works at Tennova Hospital.
“The gratitude that I feel as a recipient of this scholarship is insurmountable,” said Ms. Eason. “I truly feel honored to have been chosen for this prestigious award, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.”
Ms. Eason is a rising junior, majoring in early childhood/elementary education with a minor in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She is from Cleveland and has been working on campus in the Lee University Health Clinic and the Early Learning Center childcare program. During her time in Phi Eta Sigma, Ms. Eason served as president of Lee’s chapter. She is also a member of Omega Alpha Phi.
“Sammie Kate is a driven, organized, and passionate young woman,” said Dr. Shane Brown, assistant professor of elementary education. “Her desire to be the best college student possible is evident in how she excels with the projects she is given as well as the numerous ones she has volunteered for.”
Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma is the nation's oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines. The Society's mission is to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning. In 1970, nine $300 awards were granted annually. This year the Society granted nearly $300,000 in endowed scholarships or awards to outstanding members of Phi Eta Sigma for undergraduate or graduate study.
