Welden Palmer, age 84, of Dalton, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Tranquility Assisted Living of Dalton. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Edna L. Palmer. Welden was the youngest of six siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Addies, along with two sisters and three brothers. 

Mr. Palmer began his lifelong career as a public servant when he joined the U.S. Navy in 1952, serving during the Korean War. He returned to the Dalton area where he opened Palmer’s Barber Shop, later he became an insurance adjustor for the North Georgia area. He joined the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Department in 1976 and worked up to the rank of captain by his retirement. During his lifetime of service, Mr. Palmer was a member of the Tunnel Hill Lions Club and served as a city councilman and one term as mayor of Tunnel Hill, where he resided with his wife, Edna, for 50 years. After retirement, he served on the Honor Guard for the American Legion and was also a member of the VFW.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in law, Lesia and Floyd Johnson of Cumberland, Md.; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Cathy Palmer of Rocky Face, Ga.; grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica Johnson, Daniel Johnson and Alex Hunt, James and Ali Johnson, Levi Johnson, Seth and Jennifer Quinn, Garren and Carly Palmer; and great-grandson, Sager Quinn. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Rocky Face Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home with Dr. H.E. Cardin officiating. 

The family will receive friends at the Rocky Face Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 23, from 12-2 p.m.

Burial will be at West Hill Cemetery. 

Special thanks from the family to the staff of Tranquility Memory Unit who took special care of him over the past three years. Also, thank you to Hearth Hospice for their care the past six months.
