The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team scored four wins in on the opening day of the Chattanooga Collegiate Clay Court Championships at Manker Patten today.
Competitors awoke to a near city-wide water outage that lasted throughout the day. Thanks to the work of the Manker Patten staff and the UTC athletic trainers, action was only delayed for 30 minutes.
Senior Niklas Gerdes is in the quarterfinals of the 32-man singles draw. He had a bye in the first round, and defeated Eastern Illinois’ Max Pilipovic-Kljajic (6-1, 6-2) in afternoon action.
Sophomore Tomas Rodriguez is also into the quarterfinals. He defeated EIU’s Daniel Hernandez [6-4, 7-6 (8)] in the second round, after advancing with a first round bye.
Senior Turner Voges, a graduate transfer from Memphis, defeated the Panther’s Christos Kyrillou (6-2, 6-3) in the first round. Junior Jacob Marshall also had an opening round win over UAB’s Chase Parker (6-2, 6-2).
Gerdes and Rodriguez also had a bye in the first round of doubles, while Marshall and Voges are now in the consolation round. Action continues with doubles play at 9:00 a.m.
