Cleveland State women’s basketball recorded a big win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Dyersburg State in a hotly contested 59-57 game.
“In a game that came down to the difference of a basket, every basket counted and every rebound was important,” said head coach Evelyn Thompson.
Thompson spoke highly of the contributions of both Asjah Harrell and Charisma Barner in the contest. Harrell scored 14 points while dishing out five assists and recording five steals, while Barner also posted 14 points along with seven boards. “They really stepped up tonight,” said Thompson.
Britnay Gore, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, also was key to the win. “She had some really key rebounds and defensive stops at the end,” said Thompson.
The win was huge for the Lady Cougars, as it brought them to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Because they were in third, just one spot behind Dyersburg State on the TCCAA ladder, the win gives the Lady Cougars the second spot and pushed them past the Lady Eagles.
“I am proud of the way we pulled it together for the win,” said Thompson. “This showed a level of growth by coming back with the win after a loss.”
The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome Volunteer State to town. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 ET.
In the men’s game, Cleveland State suffered a 110-93 loss at #20 Dyersburg State.
Multiple Cougars, however, were able to post double-digit points in the effort. Kerry Pratt led the team with 22 points, while also recording two rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Jon Morgan tied a career-high with 18 total points paired with three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Demonte Person posted 15 points and a team-high nine assists, while Jaquez Hicks scored 11 and led Cleveland State with six rebounds.
“We did not play smart and disciplined enough to deserve to win this game today,” said head coach Lee Cigliano. “We ran into a team with good scorers and shooters and we weren’t ready to meet the challenge. We must get better quickly.”
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Combine Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 ET.
