Beijing Guitar Duo
Lee University School of Music will welcome the Beijing Guitar Duo to close out this year’s Performing Arts Series on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. The duo will also host a masterclass on Monday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. Both events will take place in the Squires Recital Hall, located in Lee’s Humanities Center.
The program will include Debussy’s “Petite Suite,” Dun’s “Eight Memories in Watercolor,” and Piazzolla’s “Tango Suite,” among others.
Praised by the Classical Guitar Magazine as “having the star potential to serve as inspiration for new generations of guitarists to come,” Beijing Guitar Duo made its New York debut in Carnegie Hall in 2010. The duo, comprising guitarists Meng Su and Yameng Wang, has performed around the world in halls such as Concertgebouw, Palau de Musica, Tchaikovsky Hall, and the National Theatre in Beijing.
The duo will celebrate its 25th anniversary season this year with a 12-city concert tour in the United States, including Washington D.C., Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Knoxville, as well as additional performances in Europe and China. The duo regularly collaborates with orchestras and performs in ensemble with Marina Piccinini, flutist, and Grigoryan Brothers, guitarists. They also tour with their mentor Manuel Barrueco in Europe, Australia, Asia, and the U.S.
Beijing Guitar Duo’s performances and recordings have impressed the public with “an ability and artistry that exceeds their years.” The duo’s debut CD “Maracaípe,” received a Latin-GRAMMY nomination for the title piece. Their second CD, “Bach to Tan Dun,” has been widely noted for the world-premiere recording of Tan Dun’s “Eight Memories in Watercolor,” specially arranged for the duo by Manuel Barrueco.
Admission is free but tickets are required due to limited seating and are available at showclix.com or at the Dixon Center Box Office, starting Tuesday, weekdays from 3-6 p.m. Any remaining tickets will be available at the box office one hour before the concert.
