The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team scored a 7-0 shutout at Austin Peay today. The win moves the Mocs to 3-1 overall, while the Governors drop to 0-4.
“This was a solid road win for the guys,” stated head coach Chuck Merzbacher. “I’m proud of the way we handled being on the road and getting the job done. This is good preparation for a big weekend that awaits us next week.”
Senior Niklas Gerdes improved to 4-0 at No. 1 with a straight-sets win today. He was pushed to a tiebreaker in both frames before pulling out the win over Christian Edison [7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)]. He also teamed with sophomore Tomas Rodriguezfor a win at No. 2 doubles.
Rodriguez was first off the court at No. 2, followed by freshman Jeffrey Dewald at No. 4. Sophomore Kerim Hyatt cliched the win at No. 3. Senior Simon Bustamante and junior Jacob Marshall also had wins at No. 5 and No. 6.
Up next for the Mocs is a visit from Presbyterian on Feb. 1 at 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) at McCallie’s Strang-Voges Tennis Center in Chattanooga.
