Lady Flames Win 66-44 Over Visiting Delta State

  • Saturday, January 25, 2020

For the second straight game, the Lee women’s basketball team jumped out to a first quarter lead (25-11) and never looked back in a Saturday afternoon victory over Delta State University inside Walker Arena.

The Lady Flames were consistent in all four quarters in posting the 66-44 victory, improving to a Gulf South Conference leading 11-1 record and 19-1 overall. It also marked the eighth straight win for Coach Marty Rowe’s club. The Lady Statesmen slipped to 7-4 (GSC) and 14-4.

Senior Abby Bertram was dominating throughout the contest and poured in 25 points to go along with her team-leading five assists, four steals and seven rebounds.
She converted 5-of-8 3-point attempts. The remainder of the Lee scoring was balanced as 10 players contributed and all 13 players that were dressed out saw playing time.

All totaled, the Lady Flames made 12-of-29 treys and shot 42% from the field. They committed only 11 turnovers and forced the Lady Statesmen into 16 floor mistakes. Senior Lindsey Roddy tallied eight points and claimed four rebounds. Becca Cheeks added seven points and Maddie Long turned in one of her best performances of the year with also seven points.

Lee won the overall rebounding battle 34-33. Camryn Grant had six boards and Nicky Widenski was strong on the defensive end, pulling down five rebounds. The Lady Flames tallied 15 points off turnovers and helped dominate the contest with a 23-5 margin in points off the bench.

With two guards back in Mississippi due to illness, the short-handed Lady Statesmen was led by 14 points and nine rebounds by Zyaire Ewing. Emesha Chatman also had 14 markers, but the Lady Flames held Delta State’s leading scorer Quantesha Patterson to only nine points. Delta State shot 33% from the field against Lee’s conference-leading strong defense.

“We expect to see this team again in tournament play and with those two guards back, it will be a different challenge for our club,” said Coach Rowe. “I was proud of our defense, especially deep in the paint area where Delta State is always strong.”

Rowe added that Bertram seems to always step up her game during this period of the season. He also liked the play of Widenski and Grant against the physical Lady Statesmen’s inside attack. He noted that his club played well without Haley Schubert being at her best. “That shows the kind of depth we have on this team. We must get ready for a challenge at Mississippi College on Thursday. That has never been an easy place for our teams to play.”

The Thursday assignment will be Lee’s only contest next week as they will have an open date next Saturday. “We need to use that little bit of extra time to get ready for a very important four home-game stretch,” said Rowe in closing.
