Marjorie Joyce Harris Mitchell

Marjorie Joyce Harris Mitchell was born September 27, 1939, at her family’s home in Eton, Georgia.  Eighty-one years later, at her home in Dalton, Georgia, on the morning of November 26, 2020, she passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Bettye Harris, and brother, Billy Harris.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 61 years, George William Mitchell Sr.; children and their spouses, Terese Mitchell, Jeff Burr, Christie and Bill Mitchell and Tammy and Steve Herndon; her grandchildren, Caroline And Heith Frost, Georgeanne Mitchell, Will Mitchell, Chase Herndon, Mitchell Herndon, Ellis Herndon and Mary Margaret Herndon; and great-grandchildren, Jack and Violet Wilson.

Joyce’s early childhood memories were made in Knoxville, Tn. She later attended West Georgia College and the University of Georgia. After a brief courtship, George and Joyce married and moved to Tacoma, Wa., where he served in the Army.  Afterward, the couple returned to settle in Dalton, Ga., and began to raise their family.

The family’s hard-working, dedicated, biggest fan, red lipstick wearing, flower-loving, Nana will forever be missed. Joyce attended every ball game and match. All the while, creating a happy, stable home filled with so much love. Her light will continue to shine through each and every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild.

Joyce obtained her real estate license and worked for Kinard Realty for many years.  She served on the panel for the Division of Family & Children Services, retiring in 2019. Joyce was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. But, her most important and greatest accomplishment in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She rejoiced in each of their accomplishments and, more importantly, their character. She gave them all her love, and they gave back in full measure.

The family will have a private memorial and asks that you hold Joyce in your hearts and the family in your prayers. Memorial donations may be made to the Dalton Public Library, 310 Cappes Street, a place Joyce visited frequently and loved.

Love Funeral Home, (706) 278-3313.
