Mildred Williams

Mildred Jean Williams was born and raised in Smithfield, N.C., and completed her education in the Johnston County Public School System.

At an early age she was baptized and became a member of the Bentonville Disciples Church.  She married the late James Daniel Williams and to their union four children were born.  Following his untimely death in 1969, she continued to raise their four children as a single parent. She worked at Johnston Memorial Hospital where she was employed for more than 20 years as a Head Cook and really enjoyed cooking just as much as those who enjoyed her extraordinary cuisine.

She joined the Evans Chapel AME Church located directly across the street from her home, religiously attended and participated in the church ministries including Wednesday evening Bible Study and Sunday Worship Service, and was a dedicated member of the Missionary Union.  In her spare time, she completed a course in Upholstery at Johnston Technical College and utilized this newly crafted skill for furniture items in her home. She enjoyed singing and even composed a song and was invited to sing it at various times and the homegoing services of her friends in the community.  As a mother and grandmother, she was extremely devoted and proud of her family.

Since 2018, Jean resided in Chattanooga, with her daughter and son-in-law. While living in Tennessee, she never met a stranger and was loved by many extended family members as well as members of Second Missionary Baptist Church and the local community. On Nov. 30, at the age of 82, God called her home.

Jean leaves to mourn, one daughter, Elizabeth (Edward) Cooper of Chattanooga; two sons, Dennis Williams of Smithfield, N.C. and Reginald Williams of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Hubert Graham of Smithfield, N.C. and Glenn Graham of Hampton, Va.; ; one sister, Denise Graham of Hampton, Va.; sisters-in-law, Roberta Merritt of Goldsboro, N.C. and Louise Williams of Smithfield, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Williams of Goldsboro, N.C. and Joseph (Shirley) Williams of Four Oaks, N.C.; four granddaughters; three grandsons; two great granddaughters, five great grandsons; one great-great granddaughter; nine nieces; sixteen nephews;  two great nieces; three great nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 2–6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home.  Mrs. Williams will be laid to rest in North Carolina.

Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 423 622-9995.
