Covenant Baseball Splits On Opening Weekend

The Covenant baseball team secured the series victory but split the doubleheader with Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon from Lookout Mountain.

The Scots took game one 7-4 to take the series but was defeated 13-4 in the finale for Emory & Henry's first win of the season.

Covenant is now 2-1 on the year while the Wasps move to 1-4.

GAME ONE: COVENANT 7, EMORY & HENRY 4

A four spot in the sixth inning pushed the Scots past the Wasps in the first game of the day.

CJ Edmond singled through the right side to score Tyler Moore and Brett Kernodle in the home half of the sixth to give Covenant a 5-4 advantage to take their first lead of the game.

Brooks DuBose and Hunter Christian then had back-to-back sacrifice flies to score Edmond and Alex Gonzalez to give the Scots some insurance runs and take a 7-4 lead.

The guests then threatened in the top of the seventh getting the first two on via a walk and single with nobody out.
Connor Austin then caught Jacob Zoller looking and caused Joe Tolone to ground into a double play to give the Scots the victory.

Andrew Cline got the start on the mound and lasted five innings allowing only five hits and four runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out a pair.

Connor Austin pitched the final two innings picking up his first win of the season in as many appearances. Austin allowed only one hit and a walk to go with one strikeout.

The Wasps got on the board first with a Tolone RBI double and tacked on three more in the top half of the third to take a 4-0 lead.

The Scots started their comeback in third as Edmond laced one to left-center for an RBI double and DuBose reached on an error to cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the third.

Gonzalez then walked in a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3 before Covenant put up four runs in the sixth.

Edmond finished the game 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Moore went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot while Kernodle had a 2-for-3 contest.

Caleb Haynes was 2-for-3 and Tolone went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the wasps.

J.T. Agosto started on the hill going 3.2 innings allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with a pair of strikeouts. Ethan Cave came in for 1.1 innings of effective relief work allowing just one hit and striking out one. Zach Houston was tagged with the loss as he worked the final inning allowing four earned runs on four hits.

GAME TWO: EMORY & HENRY 13, COVENANT 4

After starting back-and-forth Emory & Henry put up a five spot in the second inning to claim their first win of the season.

Chandler Kezele blasted his first home run of the season in the first to give the Wasps a 2-0 lead and Covenant answered as Moore scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half in the first.

Haynes got the scoring started in the second with an RBI single to left and Kezele capped it off with a 2 RBI double to center to give the guests a 7-1 lead that could not be overcome.

Nick Pettit started the game for the Scots but was chased out after only 1.1 innings of work allowing three hits, three walks, four earned runs and was tagged with the loss.

Adam Carver came in relief and lasted just two innings allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out three.

Aaron Northcutt had four unearned runs on three hits and three strikeouts.

Noah Griffin was the game two starter for the Wasps lasting 3.1 innings giving up four hits, three runs (two earned), and a trio of walks.

Alex Laws got the win with three innings of work allowing just one hit, one run, two walks, and struck out three.

Jordan Smith closed out the game for them striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Kezele went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Hayden Milley was 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Wasps.

Moore wrapped up his day with a 2-for-4 performance to lead the Covenant offense.

The Scots open up USA South competition as they play host to Maryville for a three-game set. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.
