Taylor De Adder went 3 for 3 with a home run in Sunday’s victory.
Behind the arms of Lulu Vasquez and Gracie Leslie and timely hitting the Lee softball team avoided a series sweep in defeating West Georgia, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Butler Field.
Vasquez started and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning to jump start her club. She received some support the very next inning as the Lady Flames scored two runs on a sacrifice fly from Abby McKinney. Lily Hatcher scored on the fly out to shallow right while Taylor De Adder also came home to score after an errant throw.
Vasquez would make the lead stick as she tossed five scoreless innings allowing just four hits while striking out five with a devasting change up.
The win moves the junior transfer from Norwalk, Calif. to 2-2 on the year. Gracie Leslie tossed the final two innings and kept the Wolves at bay allowing just one run on two hits.
"Are pitching was solid again today, just like in game one," said Lee coach Emily Russell. "Lulu was changing speeds well to keep their offense off-balance and I thought Gracie showed great poise in the circle in the final two innings not getting rattled by our poor defense."
The Lady Flames committed four errors, three in the final two innings, but West Georgia was not able to capitalize on the opportunities.
De Adder led the offensive attack with two singles and a two-run home run. The sophomore drove in three runs and score a pair and is now hitting a sizzling .520 on the season.
Lexie Close (4-2) suffered the loss for the Wolves as she lasted just two-plus innings before giving way to Morgan Goree. Close was charged with four runs, three earned on three hits. Goree struck out seven in four innings of relief and allowed two runs and finished the series with 15 punch outs in seven innings of work.
"We talked about putting yesterday behind us and I thought our approach to the game and focus was much better today," added Russell. "It gives us something to build on as we start GSC play and hopefully an opportunity to learn and get better."
Lee improves to 5-4 on the year and are 1-2 in the GSC while the Wolves move to 6-5 and are 2-1 in league play.
West Georgia took both games on Saturday to open the series. The Lady Flames dropped a tight pitcher's duel in game 1, 3-2 before being blindsided by the Wolves in a 14-1 run-rule loss in game two.
The Lady Flames will welcome Carson-Newman to town for mid-week non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Butler Field.
