Mocs Tennis Team Splits In Sunday Action

  • Sunday, February 16, 2020
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team split two matches at McCallie’s Strang-Voges Tennis Center Sunday.  UTC dropped a 6-1 morning affair to Marquette in the first contest, and rebounded with a 7-0 win over Brenau in the evening dual.

UTC moves to 5-2 overall, while Marquette improved to 3-5. Brenau, ranked No. 8 in the nation in the NAIA Coaches Poll, falls to 2-1.

The Marquette dual was a lot closer than the final score, with four of the six singles matches going three sets.  The Golden Eagles took the doubles point with wins at No.
1 and No. 3, but junior Emma Van Hee and sophomore Caroline Gibbens did score a win at No. 2.

UTC won the first set in three of the six singles matches, but all three of those went to three sets.  Freshman Jessie Young pulled out a win at No. 1 over Fluer Eggink (6-2, 2-6, 7-5).  She was trailing 5-2 in the final frame before storming back to take the point.

Brenau started hot in the nightcap, wining the doubles point.  Young and junior Bogdanan Zaporozhets won at No. 2, but the Golden Tigers took the others.

UTC grabbed the momentum back in singles with first-set wins in five of the six matches.  Freshman Grace Anne Dunavant was first off with a (6-0, 6-1) win at No. 6.  It was her first point in a dual this spring.

Sophomore Polina Goloputova made it 2-1 with a straight-sets win at No. 2, followed by freshman Callie Billman’s win at No. 5.  Van Hee clinched the team win at No. 4

Up next for the Mocs is a trip to Tennessee on Friday, Feb. 21.  The next home match is March 7 against Western Carolina at the UTC Tennis Center.
