Seniors Alan Smith and Ryan Beamish combined for six hits, seven RBI and scored seven runs in leading Lee to a 13-4 victory over Lewis University (Illinois) on Sunday afternoon at the “Carp”. The win gave the Flames two wins in the three-game series as they bounced back from a disappointing loss on Saturday.

Smith continued his hot hitting with a double, single and his second home run of the year. Beamish followed with a pair of doubles and a one-base hit.

Dylan Standifer added two hits and scored a run while Justen Freeman blasted his first career home run and also collected three RBI.

“We did a great job of getting two-out hits or walks to extend innings today. Alan Smith had a tremendous weekend at the plate and Beamish is really playing well also,” praised Lee coach Mark Brew. “Our defense is starting to take a turn for the better with our second errorless game of the season.

Alan Carter (2-0) started and worked 5.2 innings. He allowed seven hits, four earned runs, struck out six and walked one. Tyler Fairchild came in for an inning but had some control problems. He issued four free passes and struck out one. Andrew Franklin came on to seal the deal for the Flames. In 2.1 innings, the lefty did not allow a hit, issued no free passes and fanned three.

“(Alan) Carter did a solid job up front and (Andrew) Franklin did an excellent job in relief,” commented Brew about his pitching.

Lee exploded for four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Beamish delivered a two-run double that plated Luke Hughes and (Alan) Smith. Standifer had a single and scored on an error by the Flyers. Three more runs when up on the board in the second. Cody Smith singled and Hughes was hit by a pitch for the second straight time. (Alan) Smith’s two-base knock pushed (Cody) Smith and Hughes across the plate.

Lee took advantage of four walks in the fourth inning and (Alan) Smith scored again after Freeman walked with the sacks jammed. (Alan) Smith homered for another run in the fifth and Freeman delivered his two-run bomb in the sixth. Not to be outdone, Beamish ripped a double that scored (Alan) Smith in the seventh and Standifer plated Beamish with his one-base hit.

The Flyers fought back for three runs in the third on a three-run homer by Ryan Schefske. Anthony Rios doubled and added a run in the sixth to cap the Flyer scoring for the afternoon. Anthony Cavalieri had three hits and scored once in the loss.

Lewis University used five hurlers in the loss. Matt Verdun was the starter and loser. In two innings, he surrendered five hits and six earned runs. Matt Pienito, Bryan Ward, Jake Karaba and Mike Stevens  also toed the rubber for the Flyers.

The Flames are scheduled for a nine-inning contest at Lincoln Memorial University on Tuesday at 2 p.m. They will return to Gulf South Conference play next Saturday and Sunday at Christian Brothers University.
