The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera will present Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2 on Thursday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre. This performance in the Barnett & Company Masterworks Series is part of the CSO’s year-long celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday and will feature Gloria Chien, artistic director of the String Theory chamber music series, as guest pianist on his Piano Concerto No. 2.

The evening will also feature contemporary Serbian composer Jelena Dabic's Beethaphase, Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz from the seminal German opera, and Paul Hindemith's homage to Weber, Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber.

“This program showcases works that pay homage to great composers,” said Kayoko Dan, CSO music director. “Gloria Chien from String Theory will join us on the stage for Beethoven's second piano concerto, and Jelena Dabic’s Beethaphase is a reflection of Beethoven's works. Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis is a four-movement work that is based on themes taken from Carl Maria von Weber's incidental music, and we will also feature one of Weber’s own overtures in the program.”

Several special events are also planned in conjunction with the performance, including an open rehearsal of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre. Tickets for the rehearsal are $8 and must be pre-purchased at chattanoogasymphony.org. Attendance will be limited to 40 guests.

The public is also invited to the Women in Classical Music panel featuring Dr. Chien, Ms. Dan, and Dr. Lynn Worcester Jones, assistant professor and keyboard area coordinator at UTC. The panel will take place Wednesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga Library Auditorium and will be moderated by CSO Executive Director Samantha Teter. The event is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and is free of charge.

As part of Music in Our Schools Month, music educators are invited to join the CSO as special guests in the VIP lounge during intermission at the March 5 concert, where they can enjoy free hors d’oeuvres and wine. To RSVP for the reception, please call 267-8583 and mention the music educator discount when purchasing your concert ticket.

Tickets for Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2 can be purchased by calling the CSO Box Office at 267-8583 or by visiting the CSO’s website at chattanoogasymphony.org.
