Cleveland State Baseball Wins Conference Opener Against Jackson State

Cleveland State Baseball opened its 2020 TCCAA campaign with a win, defeating Jackson State 10-5 in Jackson, Tenn. on Friday. The Cougars put up five runs in the second inning and then never looked back, scoring three in the third and two in the fourth to build their lead.

Four different Cleveland State players were able to have three-hit games. Alex Ray went three-for-four from the dish, driving in a team-high three runs while also walking twice and scoring a run. Lance Dockery was three-for-four with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored, while Tanner Hill went three-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored. Gavin Hollis was also three-for-five and also crossed home once for the Cougars. Courtney Payne was the fifth Cleveland State batter to have a multi-hit game, driving in two runs while batting two-for-four with a run scored and a walk.

On the mound, Bryce Jenkins earned the win with a solid start. He allowed just three earned runs in five innings of work while also striking out four batters. Cougars Jared Young, Bradley Hayes, and Brennan Davis combined to pitch four innings of two hit, no earned run baseball in relief of Jenkins.

The Cougars will play conclude their series with the Green Jays tomorrow with a two-game set. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
