Melvin Benton
Melvin Benton, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020, in a local health care facility.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a deacon at New Emmanuel Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Timothy Benton and Gerald Benton Sr.; parents, Horace and Queenie Benton; brother, Joe Benton; sisters, Mattie Chapman, Olivia Burton and Sydella Bankston; nephews, Lee Benton, Arthur Benton and Phillip Benton; sister-in-law, JoAnn Benton; brother-in-law, Wayne Robinson; and father-in-law, Jesse Robinson.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Gwendolyn Benton; children, Myra Taylor-Lane, Marvin Taylor, Randall High, Sherida Smith, and Marcus Price, all of Chattanooga, Anthony Williams of Columbus, OH, Cassandra Moorer of Birmingham, AL, and Brian Archie of Los Angeles, CA, and Andre Greer; grandchildren, D.Michelle Benton, Asia Jones, Tahlia Smith and Henry Smith, Jr., Mariyah Price, all of Chattanooga, and Gerald (Falen) Benton, Jr. of Norfolk, VA; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Bobby Benton; sister, Beatrice (Walter) Barker of Columbus, GA; mother-in-law, Ernestine Robinson; sisters-in-law, Annie Borkman and Marilyn Millisap, all of Chattanooga; brother-in-law, Myron (Renee) Robinson; devoted aunt, Mary Baker of Buffalo, NY; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.
He will lie in state on Sunday, April 26, from 12:30-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.
A family service will be on Monday, April 27, at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Terrance Hannah as the eulogist. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
