Shayna Ryan excelled on the field and in the classroom to earn the first ever GSC Champion Scholar Athlete Award for women's lacrosse.
Shayna Ryan of Lee has been named the 2020 GSC Women's Lacrosse Champion Scholar-Athlete.
This is the first year that the league office has given out the Champion Scholar-Athlete Award. Normally, the award would be handed out at the site of each GSC Championship, but this is unable to occur due to the cancellation of the conference's spring competition this year.
"Shayna Ryan's academic excellence reflects her drive in the classroom. She has a similar drive on the lacrosse field where she is always seeking ways to improve her game and do whatever it takes to help her team. Shayna is the paradigm of a Lee University student-athlete," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin.
On the field through eight games, Ryan delivered 19 goals and five assists to help the Lady Flames jump out to their best start in program history at 6-2.
In the final game of the season at Converse before play was suspended, she scored four goals and had three assists for a season-high seven points as Lee rolled to a 23-3 victory.
Ryan, a sophomore digital media communications major from Collierville, Tennessee, has a 4.0 GPA and has completed 94 credit hours. GPA is based on the most recently completed term, and the individual must have a minimum of 48 credit hours to be eligible for the award. Student-athletes are only eligible to win the award one time per academic year.
