Mocs Set School Record With 195 Student-Athletes On SoCon Honor Roll

  • Thursday, June 25, 2020

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga set a school record with 195 student-athletes earning a spot on the 2019-20 Southern Conference Honor Roll.  UTC also set a record with 34 student-athletes posting an annual 4.0 GPA and 71 earning the SoCon Commissioner’s Medal.

Despite having one of the smallest populations of overall student-athletes in the conference, UTC was second in the SoCon in number of Commissioner’s Medals earned and student-athletes with an annual 4.0 GPA.

The SoCon Honor Roll originated in 1988-89, when league athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the conference's outstanding student-athletes.

The academic honor roll consists of individuals who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists.

The award is different from the academic all-conference award, announced Wednesday, which is determined by cumulative GPA and involves a participation requirement.

The SoCon Commissioner’s Medal is awarded to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.8 or higher throughout the year. This standard rose from 3.5 beginning in 2015-16.  It should be noted that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some schools instituted measures of academic relief this year.

Football (52), men’s basketball (13) and men’s tennis (10) all set UTC program records for SoCon Honor Roll recognition.  Men’s tennis also posted program highs for SoCon Commissioner’s Medals (6) and annual 4.0s (3).

Women’s basketball (4), women’s cross country/track & field (7), women’s golf (2), women’s tennis (3), softball (4) all set or tied program marks for the most annual 4.0 GPAs in one academic year.  Women’s basketball (5), softball (11) and volleyball (8) all set or tied marks for most SoCon Commissioner’s Medals earned since the requirements moved to a 3.8 GPA in 2015-16.
