Thomas David “Dave” Prater went home to be with his Savior and Lord on Thursday, July 30, 2020.

Born on September 23, 1932, he is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Wanda Clingan Prater; daughter, Jill Prater Schoolfield (Scott); granddaughter, Allison Burk (Andy), great-grandsons, Owen, Griffin and August; grandson, Eric Schoolfield (Sammy Jo) and great-granddaughters, Emma, Josie and Ellie.

Mr. Prater was a lifelong member of Ridgedale Baptist Church where he and Wanda were married.

Mr. Prater was an avid lover of racing, flying and motorcycles.  He was involved in the chartering of the now Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip.  He raced drag cars for many years and was a tough contender.  Once he stopped racing, he began flying experimental aircraft and small fixed wing planes.  During this time he worked for Honest Charley’s Speed Shop continuing his love for racing. In mid-life he became a certified aviation mechanic.  This allowed him to continue his love of all things mechanical and flying.  He retired from Brock Candy Company after many years of providing maintenance and co-piloting their planes.

He and Wanda enjoyed retirement traveling to many destinations by motorhome and cruise ships.  Later in life, his passion for motorcycles continued.  He rode until his 87th birthday.  Known as “Dad Dave” he was blessed to be surrounded by his grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  One of his wishes was to ride on his new motorcycle once again.  This was fulfilled with his grandson Eric riding him in style accompanied by his riding buddies.  Dave touched the lives of many by his helping and teaching of others.  He will be missed by many, especially his family.  The family wishes to thank Hospice of Chattanooga, especially Jolene, his nurse for their kindness and care.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12–2 p.m. on Monday, at the Funeral Home.  The service will be live streamed on Facebook on Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel’s page.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Chattanooga 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, Tn. 37416.
