It’s been a real challenge for football teams from Boyd-Buchanan and Chattanooga Christian to get on the field for live games, but they both got to play for the second time Friday night at Finley Stadium.

It was Senior Night for the home-team Bucs, but the celebrating ended after the pre-game celebration as CCS rolled to a 49-21 victory in a region game for both teams.

The Chargers are now 1-1 overall while the Bucs fall to 0-2.  CCS will be at home next Friday to face CAK while the Buccaneers will be on the road to face unbeaten Goodpasture.

CCS coach Mark Mariakis liked what he saw from his offense, but he was scratching his head a bit after his youthful defense allowed 21 points.  Despite all of that, the veteran coach was just happy to get a win in a big rivalry game.

“I’m glad that’s over,” Mariakis said before going to the CCS dressing room following the game.

“Boyd-Buchanan is such a quick-scoring team that I never really felt comfortable with any lead we had.  I thought we did a great job of containing their offense for the most part, but I’m not real crazy about giving up 21 points.

“This was a big rivalry game for us and we just needed to get on the field to play somebody.  I thought we were ready.  Our offensive unit is more experienced than our defense, but we have a bunch of guys who can make things happen with a football in their hand.  But at this point in the season, we’ll take a win any way we can get it,” he added.

Boyd-Buchanan coach Jeremy Bosken certainly didn’t like the outcome, but he had plenty of praise for his team that never quit and were eager to keep learning, even when the outcome had already been decided.

“That’s not what we were expecting as we just didn’t play very well,” Bosken said after a post-game chat with his kids.

“They got us, so that’s a tip of the cap to Chattanooga Christian.  This isn’t who we are, but I liked that we kept battling and kept looking for solutions.  Even at the half when we were down by three touchdowns, there was no whining or finger pointing.

“I love the heart these guys showed as this is a totally new team.  We just have to put the pieces together a little better, but we ran the ball hard and our receivers made some nice plays downfield.  Now we have to get ready for Goodpasture, which is undefeated.  That could be a tough road trip,” Bosken concluded.

The Chargers scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters as they piled up 437 total yards, including 347 on the ground.  Senior quarterback Sam Hall didn’t have to throw much as he completed three of seven passes for 66 yards, but two of those were good for touchdowns.

Sophomore Javoris Havis made the most of his opportunity as he tossed a 24-yard TD to freshman A. J. Wallace on a razzle-dazzle option pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, extending the CCS lead to 43-14.

Senior Traveon Scott had a big game for CCS with three touchdowns, including a 65-yard run midway through the first period that put the Chargers on the board.  He later had a 10-yard run after catching a 53-yard TD pass from Hall.

Boyd-Buchanan quarterback Eli Morris accounted for all three of his team’s scores with TD passes of 25 and 29 yards to Caden Johnson and a 23-yarder to JaMichael McGoy late in the third quarter.

JaMicheal Baxter was the leading rusher for CCS with 127 yards on 19 carries while Scott had 112 yards on nine attempts.  He also was the leading receiver for the Chargers with 60 yards on two grabs, including the 53-yarder with 1:58 left in the second quarter that gave his team a 29-7 lead at the break.

Boo Carter also had a big game rushing with 99 yards on nine carries.

David Dixon was Boyd’s leading rusher as the bullish junior finished with 76 yards on a eight trips.  Matthew Stone was close with 73 yards on a dozen trips. Morris finished with 49 yards.

Johnson was the leading receiver for the Bucs with five catches for 51 yards while McGoy had 27 yards on four receptions.

Defensively, Rafe Montgomery had a pair of interceptions for CCS in the fourth quarter.

While the Chargers piled up 437 total yards and 18 first downs, the Bucs countered with 310 total yards and 21 first downs.
