U.S. Navy Veteran Was Longtime Electrician

Ernest L. Svoboda, 79, of East Ridge, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2020.

He was born on June 22, 1941 in Temple, Texas.  Ernie graduated from Bartlett High School in Bartlett, Texas. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and became a Naval Seebee. He worked as an electrician after leaving the Navy, working several years for Eclipse Boiler Company, Reece’s Distributing Company, and CB electric.   

Ernie was a faithful member of South Seminole Baptist Church and served in various positions throughout the years including deacon and Men’s Sunday School Teacher.  

His parents, Albin and Stella Franz Svoboda, his sister, Marcella Svoboda Karl, and his brother, Charles Svoboda, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Wilson Svoboda, daughter, Susan (Tony) Helms, son, Joel (Kendra) Svoboda; four grandchildren, Travis and Holley Helms; McKenna and Addison Svoboda, brother, Dwight (Hella) Svoboda, brother-in-law, Terry Wilson, sister-in-law, Donna Waller, as well as several nieces and nephews.  

A Celebration of Ernie’s Life will be held at South Seminole Baptist Church on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 11:30 a.m.

The family will receive friends at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 4-8 p.m. and prior to the service at the church Thursday starting at 10 a.m. Ernie will be laid to rest in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the doctors and nurses at Parkridge Hospital who cared for him during the past several months.
