Carl Michael Cooper, loving husband, father of three children, grandfather to eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at the age of 82.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1938, to Thomas Worth Cooper and Olia Lavella Cooper in Birmingham.

Carl attended Woodlawn High School in Birmingham and received his engineering degree from Georgia Tech in 1960. After graduation he was employed by Connors Steel in Birmingham, then Dupont in Chattanooga for over 45 years as a mechanical engineer.

On Nov. 28, 1958, Carl married his sweetheart Evelyn Kay Cooper and remained married for 62 years. Together they raised three children, Holley, Todd and David in Chattanooga.

Carl was a real a sportsman with passion for golf, "working out" at the Hixson Sports Barn among his friends, hiking and riding his yellow Gold Wing motorcycle. He especially enjoyed his home and sitting on the porch in his swing watching the birds and enjoying the view.

One of the things he loved most was watching his grandchildren participate in their school sports. He never missed a game and was always early to get a good seat. He was so proud of them, win or lose. Carl was also the scoutmaster for Troop 49 in Hixson and spent many weekends camping, hiking and even a weekend on the USS Yorktown in Charleston, South Carolina. Several of the boys earned their badges and became Eagle Scouts.

Carl will always be known as a kind and gentle man who loved his God, family, friends and country. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Joseph Cooper. Carl is survived by his wife Kay Cooper, children Holley ( Chuck} Thomas, Todd (Stacy) Cooper and David (Shauna) Cooper. Grandchildren Abby (Neal} Adams, Will (Allie} Cooper, McKenzie (Chanse) Hayes, Peyton Thomas, Jackson Cooper, Brett Cooper, Ashlyn Cooper, Aidan Cooper and great grandchildren Roe Adams, Ireland Hayes, Quinn Adams and his little buddy Kip.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson.
