After Franklin Christian Academy took Grace Baptist’s 8-man side to the brink last week, it appeared as if Bob Ateca’s undefeated group might be mortal after all. Any residual doubts regarding the Golden Eagle’s dominance was put away with Grace’s 50-6 demolition of the Tennessee School for the Deaf in the season-ending rout.
Quarterback Wesley Thompson contributed five total touchdowns in the first half (two passing and three rushing) to blow the game wide open.
He spread the ball around too, throwing scoring strikes to Carson Knecht and Avery Ivarson as he went an efficient 10-12. Knecht and Brock Passons also showed off on the ground, combining for 78 total yards. Passons rumbled for a six yard score and caught a 56 yard pass from Knecht in the second half.
The Golden Eagles airtight defense was a garbage-time TD away from a shutout. Ivarson and Thompson both had six tackles on the day, and the home team picked off the visitors twice while only allowing the same number of completions.
With the regular season finished, the 9-0 Grace Baptist Golden Eagles will eventually go to Florida to play in the National High School Tournament playoff. The tournament begins on November 12.
