The Chattanooga Mocs fell 67-52 to UAB Monday night at Bartow Arena in non-conference women’s basketball action. UTC falls to 1-6 overall and the Blazers improve to 4-2 on the year.

The Mocs trailed UAB 33-19 at the half, and came out on a mission in the third quarter, cutting the lead to six points three times. Abbey Cornelius scored 12 of her team-best 20 points in the period. She was 8-of-12 for the game and led the Mocs with six rebounds and three steals.

“UAB had two forces on the block,” head coach Katie Burrows said.
“We made an adjustment at halftime and our post players did a really good job with that.”

Freshman Addie Grace Porter got the scoring started in the third drawing a foul on her driving layup and converting the 3-point play. Karsen Murphy followed that with a layup to cut the lead to single digits and force the Blazers to call a time out.

The teams traded buckets a few times before the Mocs strung together six points, making it a seven-point game, 40-33, with 4:48 remaining in the third. Cornelius hit a pair of jumpers and made it 43-37 with 3:08 on the clock in the frame. UTC trailed 47-41 headed into the fourth quarter.

UAB pushed the lead back to double figures with a 12-4 run in the fourth to make it 61-47 with 3:41 remaining. Porter drained the Mocs second 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 11, 61-50, but the Blazers held strong for the win.

“There were some opportunities we had to get a board on the defensive end, and we quit on the play,” Burrows said. “That hurt us because UAB got some good looks out of it. Our kids are still playing their guts out, we just need to put four quarters together.”

Zakyia Weathersby led all scorers with 28 points and 18 rebounds. She was 11-of-13 from the field and went 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Emily Klaczek was 3-of-6 from the 3-point line for 12 points and Destinee McGhee was the third player in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds.

UAB out rebounded the Mocs 37-26 and scored 18 second chance points on 17 offensive rebounds compared to UTC’s five points on seven on the offensive glass. The Blazers took advantage of 19 Chattanooga miscues, converting them into 32 points while UTC scored 12 on 16 UAB turnovers.

“Late in the game, we got sloppy and didn’t take care of the ball,” Burrows said. “It was a turnover fest for both teams tonight. In the third quarter we only had one, which I was impressed with.”

From the field, the Mocs were 19-of-49 and 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. At the free throw line, UTC made 12-of-15. Chattanooga shot 50 percent (11-22) in the second half and outscored UAB 22-14 in the third quarter.

UAB shot 39.7 percent from the field and made 5-of-25 from the 3-point line while making 12-of-13 from the charity stripe.

It’s no rest for the weary. UTC will travel to Nashville for its third game in four days in three different cities to take on SEC foe Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium Tuesday night. The game is set to tip off at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. Follow all the action online at GoMocs.com.
