Lee Flames Win 95-75 Over Johnson University

  • Tuesday, November 30, 2021
Five Flames scored in double figures to lead the Lee University men’s basketball team to a 95-75 win over Johnson University Monday evening in Paul Dana Walker Arena. All 12 Lee players that checked into the game scored.

Jayce Willingham scored a team-leading 15 points while Josh Lowe and Makhi McGuire tossed in 14 points each. Quay Kennedy made 7-of-8 free throws on his way to 13 points. He also tied McGuire for a team-high seven rebounds and a game-high six assists. Michael McGuirk tallied 12 points to go with six rebounds.

The Flames outrebounded the Royals 39-32 with each team grabbing eight offensive boards.
Lee converted their rebounds into 12 second-chance points to seven for the visitors. The Lee bench posted 36 points, while Johnson received 17 points from its bench. Lee scored 60 of its 95 points in the paint.

Coby Jones posted a double-double for Johnson with 29 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Orion Mashburn (15), Miles Long (14) and Jahson Dennis (11) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Johnson. Long dished out a team-leading five assists.

The Flames held a 56-33 advantage at the half after leading by as much as 26 late in the first half. Lee again led by 26 (65-39) at the 16:17 mark in the second half before Johnson began to chip away. The Royals scored eight straight points to cut Lee’s lead from 80-60 with 6:18 remaining to 80-68 with 4:55 left on the clock. The Flames countered with a 9-0 run of their own to push its lead back to 19 with a little over three minutes to go. The closest Johnson would get the rest of the way was 16.

“I think at times we’re playing hard and competing,” said Lee head coach Bubba Smith. “I don’t know if we’re always playing as smart. Right now, we have a team that a lot of times is hoping the other teams miss rather than making teams miss. We know we need to change that. We’re aware of the things we need to change to get better. We just need to play a little bit smarter and with a little more attention to detail.”

After playing their first regular season home game tonight, the Flames will be back on the road this weekend. Lee opens Gulf South Conference action at Union University (Jackson, Tenn.) on Thursday before heading to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Christian Brothers University on Saturday.
