Prep Basketball Round-Up for Monday, December 20th

Girls

Notre Dame 46, Russell Co. 32

After trailing by one at the end of the first quarter, Notre Dame pulled ahead by five at the half and went on to win their Smokey Mountain Classic in Gatlinburg opener over Russell Co. by a 46-32 margin.

Kenzie Campbell was the catalyst, scoring eight of her 12 points in the second half. Maliyah Maples contributed 10 for the Lady Irish.

Walker Valley 60, Copper Basin 15

The Lady Mustangs closed out the tournament at Tellico Plains in a big way Monday afternoon with a 60-15 win over Copper Basin. Building a 39-3 lead at the half, Walker Valley took their foot off the gas just a smidge in the second half to coast to their ninth win of the season.

While no one hit double digits for the Lady ‘stangs, they used a balanced effort in the win. With only 13 turnovers balanced against 23 steals, Walker Valley showed their dominance over the Lady Cougars. Emily Worden pulled down nine rebounds for the Lady Mustangs.

With their record sitting at 9-4, Walker Valley heads south to Pensacola Beach, Fla., for a tournament next week.

Grundy Co. 57, Bledsoe Co. 37

The early girls’ game at The Battle at the Creek saw the Lady Yellow jackets upend Bledsoe Co., 57-37, behind Carlee Smartt’s 21 points. Charlsie Campbell and Kaylee Smartt added 10 apiece for the victors, while Ryndal Melancon led the Lady Warriors with 17 points..

Grundy Co. outscored the Lady Warriors in each of the first three quarters, building a 43-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Grundy Co. 65, Clarkrange 35

In the first  of the Battle at the Creek boys’ game of the day, The Grundy Co. Yellow Jackets stung the Buffaloes of Clarkrange, 65-35, behind Sam Parson’s 17 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Teammates Brendon Marsh and Gavin Hobbs added 11 each and Junior Crisp and Jathan Yokely each chipped in with 10.

Case Cordell led Clarkrange with 11 points.

The Yellow Jackets led 25-16 at the half before outscoring the Buffaloes 40-19 in the second half.

The late boys’ game at The Battle at the Creek had host sale Creek falling to Bledsoe Co., 57-42, with the warriors’ Garrett Tharpe tossing in 12 points to lead the way. Teammate Justin Anderson added 10.

Notre Dame 61, Fairview (KY) 43

The Irish opened the Smokey Mountain Classic in Gatlinburg with a 61-43 win over Fairview, Kentucky. Cole McCormick led Notre Dame with 18 points, knocking down 16 in the first half. D.J. Brown  added 15 for the Irish who burst out to a 21-10 lead after the first quarter.

Jasen Manning of Fairview led all scorers with 22.

Bradley lost to Jackson Co., 47-43, in the first game of the Clay Co  Christmas Tournament in  Celina, Tenn. On Monday.

Brandon Shumbera netted 14 points for the Bears, but it was not enough to secure the win. Tre Monette had 17 for Jackson Co. to lead the win, while teammate Jordan Arroyo had 12.

Bradley (6-5) only trailed by two at the half, 16-14, but Jackson (7-3) outscored the Bears by nine in the third quarter to secure the win.
