McCallie Students Win Many Categories In National History Day Competition

McCallie students that placed well in the National History Day competition

In the Southeast Tennessee regional competition for National History Day, McCallie history students placed very well. Dr. Duke Richey’86, Senator Howard Baker ’43 Chair of American History, reported that 10 eleventh graders who placed in the top three in their categories will now be eligible for the state competition to be held later in March.

Champions in the following categories:

Individual Website
First Place: Andrew Negus, son of Brian and Mary Negus of Chattanooga. Topic: “Sequoyah and the Cherokee Phoenix: How Communication Evolved Cherokee Nationalism”

Second Place: Amaar Memon, son of Naveed and Zara Memon of Chattanooga. Topic: “Confidence Men: The Elite of the American Underworld”

Third Place: Jackson Scarbrough, son of Wayne and Paula Scarbrough of Cleveland, Tennessee. Topic: “Writings of the Wilderness Prophet: John Muir and the Rise of American Environmentalism”

Second Place: Levi Lebovitz, son of Alan and Allison Lebovitz of Chattanooga. Topic: “The Ideological Roots of the Civil Rights Movement: Howard Thurman's Communication of Unity and Nonviolence”

Third Place: Luke Gilbert, son of Tobin and Monique Gilbert of Charlotte, North Carolina. Topic: “George Moses Horton: A Slave's Motive for Communication in the Antebellum South”

Senior Individual Documentary Film
First Place: Rowdy Stephens, son of Bruce and Caroline Stephens of Wytheville, Virginia. Topic: “Socialist Nomenclature and the Advancement of Politics”

Third Place: Ian Brunetz, son of Courtney Brunetz of Chattanooga and Neil Brunetz of Chattanooga. Topic: “Billy Graham: Communicating His Evangelical Message During the 4th Great Awakening”
