Covenant Women Close Out Hoops Season With 63-44 Loss At Berry

  • Friday, March 5, 2021
The Covenant women's basketball team wrapped up the 2020-2021 season with a 63-44 loss at Berry Friday night. The Scots and the Vikings agreed to play the extra game after both narrowly missed their post season tournaments.

Cosette Kirsch led Covenant with 20 points, knocking down five 3-pointers. Ruthie Moore added nine points and six rebounds.

The first few minutes remained close, as the visiting Scots tied the score 7-7 off of a jumper by Madison Blevins at the 6:41 mark.
However, the Vikings would end the first period on a 9-2 run, extending their lead out to seven (16-9).

Covenant would come within two points of Berry, starting the second quarter with five straight points. A 3-pointer by Kirsch 12 seconds in and a layup by Moore at the 8:30 mark would make the score 16-14.

But the host Vikings would hold the Scots to four points for the remainder of the period, once again only scoring nine total points for the quarter. Berry went on to outscore Covenant 15-4 over the last eight minutes of the period.

Starting the third down 31-18, the Scots' offense began to improve, as they would score 15 points during the quarter, which was nearly what was scored over the entire first half. Covenant hit three shots from behind the arc, shooting at 50 percent.

But, the hot streak seemed to rub off on the Vikings, as they too would go to shoot 50 percent from the floor (5-for-10) and 66.7 percent from 3-point land (2-for-3).

Entering the final quarter down by 15 points (48-33), the baskets would go cold again for the Scots, as they only made three field goals. Covenant would add 11 points during the final 10 minutes, but it was not enough as Berry would pull away to win 63-44.

Covenant ends the season winning seven of their last nine contests. The Scots finish at 8-15 overall and 7-7 in USA South play.

Berry was led by Madeline Sandman with 21 points and eight rebounds. Mary Walters added 11.
