U.S. Navy Veteran Was Longtime Dixie Youth Association Baseball Coach

Wendell Wilkie Sharpe, 80, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at his home.

 

He was born on Aug. 10, 1940, in Chattanooga to the late Noel and Lucille Sharpe. A son, Kenny Sharpe; a sister, Orene Sharpe Ross, and a brother, Lendal Sharpe, preceded him in death. 

 

Mr. Sharpe was a 1958 graduate of City High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served four years on the USS Ranger.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 95, Alhambra Shrine and a member of the masonic lodge. After retiring from Parks and Recreation he would volunteer his time entertaining residents of local nursing homes. He coached Dixie Youth Association Baseball from 1965-1978.

 

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Sue Sharpe; children, Shelly Sharpe, Stephen (Kim) Garland and Brian (Courtney) Garland; grandchildren, Dixie (Jacob) Falls, Bradley Garland, Christin Garland, Noah Garland, and Crew Garland; great grandchildren, Zane Falls and Isaiah Falls; his first wife, Judy Umbarger Sharpe, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Eddie Ellison officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 12-2 p.m. on Wednesday.
