Mary McCutchen Caines, 98, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 11, 2021, having been surrounded by family the two weeks prior.
She was born in Bishopville, South Carolina on September 30, 1922 to the late John and Allie Anderson McCutchen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Haynes Lennon Caines; son, Lennon Caines Jr, and her four siblings, Penny McCutchen, John McCutchen, Louise Boulineau, and Jane Green.
Mary and her husband, Haynes, met in South Carolina but raised their family in Trenton, New Jersey, building multiple homes that Mary designed, while serving their church and community well. When Haynes retired from US Steel, they moved back South and opened the Palm Den Gift and Surf Shop in N. Myrtle Beach, SC. Mary lost her husband in 1984, but continued to run the shop as long as she could, eventually moving to Ringgold, Georgia to live next door to her son, Render, and his family.
Mary lived her life serving and loving her Lord and tending to her family. She also prayed for her family and friends constantly, always checking on those that needed extra love and attention. Her example as a godly, self-sacrificing mom and grandma was extremely evident to all the lives she touched. She loved her family and did everything she could to take care of them. She was an incredible budgeter and business lady, saving and investing enough to support nine grandkids through braces, first cars, and college tuition.
Mary was known by many for her sweet tea, fried chicken, and homemade biscuits. She also had a fierce sweet tooth and never refused a Coke or a Little Debbie. If you were fortunate enough to visit her home, you became extremely aware of how much she loved to garden and have fresh flowers on the kitchen table. She also loved to crochet and gift many with baby blankets that she tediously perfected.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but she is now with her Lord and Savior and her family is happy to know she is free from the pain and sorrow of the world, which she knew too well. Survivors include her son, Render (Linda) Caines; daughter, Candy (Gordon) Meiners; nine grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, please give to Mary’s granddaughter’s mission fund. Heidi Meiners has served 17 years at the International Christian School of Budapest in the Supplemental Services department helping students with various learning differences across grades K to 12. Currently she is the department head.

There will be a funeral service the afternoon of Monday, June 21, in Bishopville, SC, at the family graveyard behind the Hephzibah Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 17.
