Jane Brooks Young, 84, of Pasadena, California, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020.

Jane was born in Gainesville, Texas, on March 25, 1935, to Esther and Harry Brooks. After graduating from Gainesville High School she received her B.A. degree from Covenant College, at that time in St. Louis, Missouri. She received a master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University, in 1961. She taught at Cono Christian School in Walker, Iowa, and after doing some graduate work at the University of Georgia she became an assistant professor of English at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, which became her home for over 40 years. She also taught high school English at Chattanooga Christian School, a school that was special to her because her husband, John M. L. Young was one of its founders. She and her husband went to the mission field in Japan from 1981-1987, where she helped with a Japanese church, taught two women’s English classes, had a Sunday night Bible study for young missionaries, and volunteered at the Christian Academy in Japan.

Jane was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of America, at the time of her death.

Jane was known for being a loving mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. She was known for her Sunday dinners, being a home away from home for college students and young missionaries in Japan, and being an amazing friend. She loved celebrating Christmas and birthdays. She loved sports events at Chattanooga Christian School, cheering on her children and grandchildren, and college football. People loved her wit and sense of humor. People have often said she helped them through a difficult time, gave wise counsel, and made them feel supported.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John M.L. Young, her sister, Madeline Brooks Estes, her brother, Harry Brooks, her brother, Hal Brooks, her sister, Myrtle Anna Brooks Brown, her sister, Sarah Lou Brooks Crow, her brother, Ted Brooks, her daughter and son in law, Ruth Young Bellar and Jack Bellar, and her nieces, Karen Simpson and Rebekah Crow Farrington.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laurel Young Laird and Sean Laird, her grandson, Addison Laird, her grandson, Griffen Laird, her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Young Minor and William Minor, her grandson, Andrew Minor, her son and daughter-in-law, John and Ginnie Young and family, her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Karen Young and family, her son and daughter-in-law, Rev.
