John Glenn Hawkins, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Monday, July 26, 2021, at the age of 79.

 

John was born in Dalton, Ga., on Feb. 20, 1942. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He started work as a United States Peace Corp Volunteer in India from 1965 to 1967. He then travelled to Thailand and was employed by the U.S. Government and was assigned to the U.S. airbase in South Thailand. He was drafted in 1968 into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam during the infamous Vietnam War, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant in the Combat Infantry Unit. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service to the Country.

 

Upon discharge from the U.S. Army, he remained in Vietnam as a civilian working for a freight forwarding company until the fall of Vietnam. From thereon, he worked and represented US companies (Wheelabrator, Pangborn) specializing in the sale of sandblasting machineries to shipyards and oil rigs in Vietnam and rest of Asia. He had travelled worldwide which included his over 40 years of living in Singapore. Over the years, he had made so many dear friends whom he had kept in contact until dementia took a toll on his memories.

 

He enjoyed water sports activities, played squash, loved to walk.

 

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Glenn Hawkins Sr. and Rosella Martin Smith.

 

John is survived by his wife Marina, daughter Jennifer (Keith), son Sean; two grandchildren Abby and Linh Louis; siblings John, Barbara (Bill), Marilyn and Tom (Yalin); beloved aunt Ruth Young; cousins, nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends.

 

The family of John Glenn Hawkins, Jr. wishes to thank the Hospice of Chattanooga for the love and care given to him until his demise.

 

Funeral services will be held on Aug. 4, at 12:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Matt Rickman officiating.

 

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the chapel service at Hamilton Funeral Home.
