Dorothy Buchanan Hammonds
Dorothy Buchanan Hammonds, 86, of Chattanooga, transitioned July 26, 2021, at an NHC facility.
She was a 1953 graduate of George Washington Carver High School in Scottsboro, Alabama, where she was salutatorian of her class.
She was a beautician for many years in the city of Chattanooga. In 1961, she became the first black person to work as a cashier at the Red Food grocery store. She retired from Dixie Yarns after 32 years of service.
She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and of the Golden Harvest Ministry. She was a member of the James Cleveland Workshop Choir of America.
Dorothy was the youngest of six siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bertha Buchanan; brothers, Homer D. Buchanan, Hubert Buchanan, and Willie Buchanan; sisters, Ruby Irving, Lane Marie Buchanan, and Jo Anne Buchanan.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Hammonds and Linda Hammonds; nephews, Charles (Millie) Buchanan and LeBron Buchanan; nieces, Willie Tipton and Yvonne Daniels; brothers-in-law, Willie (Imogene) Hammonds and Jerry Hammonds; sisters-in-law, Fannie Cooper, Barbara Perkins, and Iona Hammonds; devoted cousin, Tiffany Collins; NHC caregivers, Tamika Chatman, Sharon Davis, Sharon Espey, Kyria Jones, and Crystal Smith; close friend, Jane Frierson; a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A public viewing will be held 2–6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, at the funeral home.
