Robert “Peabody” Johnson, Jr.
Robert “Peabody” Johnson, Jr., 73, died on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at Hospice of Chattanooga Care Center.
Robert was born July 19, 1948, the only son of Robert Johnson, Sr. and Daisy Mae Johnson Lane of Chattanooga. Robert was raised in the Fortwood Neighborhood where he attended Allen Temple AME Church. Robert was a 1966 graduate of Riverside High School. After high school he attended Tennessee State University before serving his country in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Robert later continued his education by earning an Associate of Science Degree in Information Systems Technology from Chattanooga State and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Robert retired from the State of Tennessee after a career as a case manager in the Juvenile Justice system.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his five sisters Johnnie Mae Ward, Barbara Prater, Ruby Johnson, Daisy Johnson Pierce and Charlotte Johnson and brother Bernard Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Wanda Gocher-Johnson; sister Maria A. Johnson; mother-in-law Wilma Gocher Elsberry; a special niece Lindella (James Brown) Johnson of Smyrna and special cousin George Matthews; brothers-in-law Marion Prater (Las Vegas, NV) and Tommy Johnson; sisters-in-law Angela Hicks and Neva Stinson, nieces Myoshia Mixon, Shavon Bratton, Julia Hughes; nephews Dshamba (Susan) Prater of Las Vegas, Rodney Ward, Anthony Prater (Las Vegas), Kemo Johnson, Damieon Johnson, Lewis Lumsden, Lamar Lumsden, and a host of other family and friends.
A visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home.
A graveside service with military honors will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
