The Covenant volleyball team may have lost in straight sets, but it was by no means an easy victory for Meredith.
After losing the first two sets by minimal margins (26-24 and 25-20), the Scots were up 18-11 in the third set, ready to keep the match going. But, the Avenging Angels would rally from behind, posting a 16-7 run to take the third set, 27-25.
The match was the first of three that the Scots are set to play at the USA South Crossover tournament hosted by the Brevard Tornados.
After back and forth action during the first two sets, the third set seemed to be all Covenant, as they were able to jump out to a seven point lead.
Meredith would fight back, though, stringing together several scoring runs.
The Avenging Angels clawed their way back within one point of the Scots, making the score 20-21 with a 9-2 run. Three quick points from Covenant, though, would make it 20-24 in favor of the Scots. But, with set point on the line, Meredith would then score four in a row, tying it up 24-24.
A kill from Riley Howe would put the Scots up 24-25, needing just one more point to win the set. But, Meredith would answer with three more points in a row, sealing their three-set victory (27-25).
Howe led Covenant with 10 kills and seven digs. Emma Kalbfleisch added seven kills and three blocks, while Kyla Bailey connected on six kills and five digs.
Rachel Bartlett recorded a double-double, with her 29 assists and 12 digs, and Anna Baldwin tallied 15 digs.
Hailey Long had 18 kills and seven digs for Meredith. Avery Bowman added 37 assists and seven digs. Lauren Phillips tallied 16 digs, while Hannah Jo Jablonski had 13 digs.
The Scots fall to 4-4, while the Avenging Angels improve to 5-4.
Covenant will play two matches at Brevard tomorrow to close out the USA South Crossover tournament. The Scots are set to face Greensboro at 9:30 a.m. and William Peace at 11:30 a.m.
