Charles “Chuck” Carpenter, 89, died on September 21, 2021. 

Chuck was a graduate of Chattanooga High School, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and the University of Pittsburg’s Graduate School of Business.  He served 24 years as an officer in the Navy Supply Corps, retiring as a Captain in 1977, followed by 17 years’ service as controller for the Johnson Mental Health Center and Volunteer Behavioral Healthcare Systems. Chuck was a member of St. Thaddaeus Episcopal Church for 43 years with service as Senior Warden, Treasurer and Eucharistic Minister.  He recently became a member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church. Chuck also served on the boards of Bridge Refugee and Sponsorship Services, Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), DuBose Conference Center, and Episcopal Metropolitan Ministries.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Guyer Carpenter and Glenda Adams Carpenter; brothers, David Gardner Carpenter and Harry Guyer Carpenter Jr., and most recently by his loving wife, Elizabeth Little Carpenter.

Survivors include son, Charles (Beverly) Carpenter, Jr.; daughters, Marie (Pat) Sugrue and Elizabeth (Bobby) Lackey; grandson, Matthew (Jamie) Schitea; granddaughters, Kristin Schitea and Hannah Carpenter; great-grandson, CaleSchitea; step-granddaughter, Nicole Sugrue; great-grandsons, Quinton and Adrian Sugrue and great-granddaughter, Londyn Sugrue.

With deep gratitude, we wish to thank the associates at Life Care Center of Ooltewah as well as the associates at The Bridge at Ooltewah.  We could not have gotten through these past several months without the love and support of each and every person who cared for Chuck.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Ooltewah. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Thaddaeus Episcopal Church, St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, or Metropolitan Ministries.
