Cary Hudson of Blue Mountain will play at The Wood Shop on Saturday, Feb. 5, with opening entertainment beginning at 7 p.m.

Review for Cary Hudson:

The name Cary Hudson brings several artists to mind. Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks, The Windbreakers, John Stirratt (Wilco) and Alex Chilton (Big Star), just to name a few.

The easy sound of the alt-country/Americana that wafted out of Oxford Mississippi in the late 80’s was, in part, due to Hudson’s unique style of guitar, incorporating both electric and acoustic, that brought this genre of music to the rest of the country. An important part of that movement was driven by Blue Mountain and their “roots rock” approach to songwriting. The band, originally comprised of Hudson, John Stirratt and Laurie Stirratt (twin sister of John). John left to form Uncle Tupelo with Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy, and Cary and Laurie with Charles David Overton on drums released their first album in 1993, and toured tirelessly from the early 90’s until their eventual breakup in 2002.

Since that time, Hudson has pursued his solo career, recording more than eight albums and collaborating with numerous other artists.

In autumn of 2020, after an extended sabbatical from the electric guitar, Cary dusted off his vintage Les Paul, and reunited Blue Mountain, playing several venues across the Southeast to the delight of loyal fans across the South.

Enter team Wood Shop with Pate Russell, Tyler Rozzell, and Dylan Hackett, all friends and business partners of “The Wood Shop” at 5500 St. Elmo Ave.

Over two years ago on Craig’s list the building, now housing The Wood Shop, was for rent, and the group, with a passionate vision, pressed forward, first with a rehearsal space, then Airbnb — and have finally what the space was truly meant to be….a music venue.

Russell, a native Mississippian, along with Rozzell and Hackett, have worked diligently to create a “listening room” that delivers a unique, high-quality experience, with a comfortable, quaint and unique setting, where both the artists and patrons can connect in an intimate environment with impressive acoustics, comfortable seating, made from scratch bar-fare and a variety of beer and wine, with special emphasis on supporting local business, such as Odd Story, Hutton & Smith, as well as Velo Coffee Roasters.

Pate, who was living in Oxford, Mississippi approximately 10 years ago was involved with in filming a documentary about Cary Hudson and Blue Mountain over the course of several performances, working with filmmaker Thad Lee.

Needless to say, this show will be full-circle for Cary and Pate as the two Mississippians bring their love of that genre of music back to Chattanooga.
