The Chattanooga Mocs women’s soccer team lost its first match in Southern Conference action Friday afternoon, falling 2-0 at Wofford.
The Mocs move to 7-4-4 overall and 5-1-2 in league play. Wofford improves to 8-6-3 on the year and 3-3-2 against the SoCon.
The Mocs created many opportunities early and had four shots on goal to the Terrier’s one. UTC outshot the Terriers 16-11 with a 6-3 shots on goal advantage, but Wofford was able to score twice for the win.
“They took two chances and we couldn’t find a way to put one in the back of the net,” Mocs head coach Gavin McKinney said.
“You’ve got to tip your hat to Wofford.”
Mackenzie Smith and Caroline Richvalsky had four shots each and Maggie Shaw recorded three. Richvalsky had half of the Mocs shots on goal and Caroline Ekern had one save.
The teams battled to a scoreless first half. However, the Terriers’ Ansley Elizade found the back of the net on deep shot in the 53rd minute to put Wofford on the board first. The second goal came in the 80th minute when Haley McCaffrey knocked home a pass from Saachi Bureau.
The Mocs will take on Furman Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Greenville. UTC still controls its destiny. A win or tie will secure the program’s first-ever SoCon title.
