Founded in 1842, Relief Society is the women’s organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  With a membership of over 7.1 million (as of Feb 2020) spread across more than 188 countries and territories, Relief Society is a force for good established in every congregation of the Church, including in the greater Chattanooga area, officials said.

Relief Society is based on the motto “Charity Never Faileth” (1 Corinthians 13:8) and is governed by a worldwide General Relief Society presidency supported by local presidencies that work together to "serve, lift and strengthen women everywhere."

Members of the Chattanooga stake Relief Society presidency are Cindy Adamz, president; Terri Owens, first counselor; Kari Goux, second counselor; and Kristin Pendleton, secretary.

Mrs.
Adamz grew up in Erie, Pa., the third of six children and went to BYU, but calls Chattanooga home.  Chattanooga is where she met her husband of 46 years and where they chose to raise their six children (five living). Mrs. Adamz is the proud “grandma” of 20 grandchildren and, since most live very far away, she has had the opportunity to travel the world as she visits and plays with them.  Professionally, she worked as a college advisor at Soddy Daisy High School for 16 years, retiring three years ago. “Helping students along their educational path was challenging, but fulfilling,” Mrs. Adamz says. “I love working with youth and have spent much of my life working with them – tutoring, advising, teaching an early morning seminary class for nine years, and also as Stake Young Women’s president for nine years.  My husband, Glenn, and I were called to serve a mission in Bangkok, Thailand in 2019.  Six days before we were to leave, COVID hit, so plans have changed and we are patiently waiting for the time when The Lord is ready to send us.  I love nature and the outdoors, gardening, reading, math, spinning and the beach.  I am excited that this new calling will give me the opportunity to work with many of “my young women” again – now as part of Relief Society.  As we prepare for the return of our Savior and Redeemer, may we contemplate the words of our beloved prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, who said, ‘My dear sisters, we need YOU.  We need your strength, your conversion, your conviction, your ability to lead, your wisdom and your voices.  We simply cannot gather Israel without YOU.’  Please know that we invite women of all faiths to join with us.  Come be a part of this wonderful sisterhood of Relief Society. It’s a great time to serve The Lord.”

Mrs. Owens, first counselor, was born in Quitman, Ga. and has three sisters and three brothers. She grew up right next door to a branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  “I love horseback riding, riding bikes on the beach and watching beautiful sunsets,” Mrs. Owens said.  “I am continually in awe of all the wonders of God’s creations.  My husband, Gene, and I have lived in Ringgold for 33 and a half  years. We have 17 children and 53 grandchildren.  I am so thrilled to be working with the amazing women of Relief Society and invite everyone to join us.  All are welcome.”

Mrs. Goux, second counselor, and her husband moved to Collegedale one year ago from Iowa.  “We made our transition during COVID,” she said.  “We both grew up in the Air Force and therefore have easily adopted the motto that we are from the place we currently reside.  We love the Chattanooga area and feel God’s hand in blessing us to be here at this time.  We have two boys – Brock and Ethan – and one daughter, Sierra.  Our children are spread across the country, but we cherish every time we are able to visit with them.  I especially love to be out in nature and feel so blessed in the peace of our Savior,” Mrs. Goux said.

Mrs. Pendleton, secretary, grew up in Ferron, Ut.  She and her family moved to Chattanooga from Lehi, Ut. 10 years ago.  She and her husband, Jason, have three children – Brittney, Cade and Jack.  She also has a son-in-law (Trey) and granddaughter (Mila). Kristin enjoys reading, paddle boarding, hiking, riding bikes on the Riverwalk, practicing yoga and watching most sports – except golf. She especially enjoys watching her two sons play sports.  Kristin loves helping and serving others and getting to know people. She feels blessed to be able to do both through her work as a dental hygienist and her calling as Relief Society secretary. She is grateful to be surrounded by so many faith-filled, good people of many different religions here in Chattanooga.

On Saturday, April 2, at 8 p.m., the Church will hold a Women’s Session of General Conference to include those who turn 12 in 2022.  “Participate at ChurchofJesusChrist.org, BYUtv or on other apps and come closer to Jesus Christ who is the Light, the Life and the Hope of the world,” said Mrs. Adamz.
