Cleveland City Schools Robitics Team Competes In Smoky Mountain Regional Competition

  • Tuesday, April 5, 2022

The Cleveland High School’s robotics team, Ministry of Mechanics, competed in the Smoky Mountain Regional Robotics Competition. This was the first in-person competition the team has attended in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many students returned to the team from the past two
years and were able to take part in the in-person Smoky Mountain Regional for the first time.

"The year has been a roller coaster ride for the Ministry of Mechanics," officials said. "Take a look at their competition robot, Hermes, in the accompanying pictures and the progression that took place
over time. Close to two weeks ago, they had a chassis, but vertical frame bars that weren't long
enough for their conveyor belts. Next, they had their conveyor system in place but no bumpers,
plexiglass shields, top hood, additional wheel system in the hood, front ramp or autonomous
coding. All of these items were added in the same week."

While at competition, the Ministry of Mechanics were determined to accomplish all that their
robot was designed to do:

- earn points for their autonomous program ("Taxi" from the taped "tarmac" area);

- load cargo through the robot's top hood; and

- shoot the cargo into the lower hub.

"They were able to accomplish these goals and were also able to load and shoot two cargo at
the same time." officials said. "They constructed a fast and strong enough robot that they were able to play defense multiple times to prevent robots from shooting accurately and 'taking flight' at their 'hanger.'”

David Gluckner, CHS engineering teacher and robotics coach said, “I have said it over and
over again this week, but I'll say it again - I'm so proud of this team, and the perseverance they've shown throughout this competition season. It is a bittersweet time because I am so excited for next year's competition, but I'm also sad to know that our seniors will be graduating. Thank you all for your hard work, your passion and for the most memorable competition year yet. I hope you had a blast creating Hermes, building new friendships and, of course, going to the Smoky Mountain Regional First Robotics Competition.”

"Congratulations to the Ministry of Mechanics for their hard work and dedication to their team," officials said.
