Evelyn Kathleen “Kathy” Bacon Umbarger, 79, of Chattanooga died Sunday, May 15, 2022 at her home. She was born September 7, 1942 in Cartersville, Georgia to the late Ellis Madison and Evelyn Cain Bacon.

She was a 1960 graduate of Girls Preparatory School. She was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga, now the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church since 1958.  She served on various church committees.

Kathy and her husband, Charlie visited every state but Hawaii, Charlie would not sit on a plane that long enough to go. One of her greatest joys was trips taken with her immediate family, this included trips to many national parks out west, and the New England states, along with many beach trips. She especially enjoyed going to Yellowstone National Park.

She was a wonderful cook and an avid gardener. She was especially proud of her hydrangeas.

She loved her family well, and showed them the love of Christ.

Kathy was known for always having one of her Labrador dogs hanging out of the window of her car.

She had fond memories of being part of the large Bacon family. She had 16 first cousins and had memories of the gatherings at her grandparents’ house on Sundays.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Charlie Umbarger; children, Ellis (Elizabeth) Umbarger, Sallie (Doug) Greene; grandchildren, Carter (Mandy) Greene, Becca Umbarger, Charlie Greene, and Kate Umbarger; and a brother, Phil Bacon.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. John United Methodist Church, 3921 Murray Hills Drive, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37416.

A Celebration of Life will be 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 3921 Murray Hills Drive, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37416, or to Hearth Hospice, 513 Georgia Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37403.

The family would especially like to thank Hearth Hospice caregivers, Leona and Theresa.
